Streaking’s bare truth

I made reference to this in a comment to Eric Maddy’s post about Charlotte (N.C.) Independence losing its 109-game winning streak -- a great run by a public school -- over the weekend at the Ohio vs. USA Challenge. By the way, the USA went 7-4 against the Ohio schools.

Given the victories by Long Beach Poly and Mission Viejo in their games, I suspect most lengthy winning streaks wouldn’t exist if those schols played competitive Southern Section schedules, i.e., Pac-5. I do believe, though, that Concord De La Salle may be the exception to my theory. During its heyday, it was beating Poly, and doing it on the road, at a time when Poly had some true talent.

But most other schools? There’s always someone out there who can beat you. Oaks Christian’s streak is now at 47, a new Southern Section record. But what would Oaks’ streak be if it played in the Trinity League, or even the Sunset League, week after week?

It wouldn’t be 47, and Independence never would have reached 109 in the same circumstances.
