And...they’re off!

There were no 100-yard dashes to the end zone, but an 87-yard scoring run by Donald Green and a 74-yard touchdown run by Curry Williams did occur in Compton’s 58-6 season-opening victory over Chino last week, and the Tartans have their school’s track program to thank.

The Tartans, who ran Chino off its own turf Friday, are required to participate in track and field during the spring, and fourth-year Coach Calvin Bryant believes the football team’s conditioning and speed are better for it.

Green, a senior who rushed for 275 yards and five touchdowns against Chino, and Williams, a junior who racked up 212 yards and scored twice, are Exhibits A and B.

Other top players like senior tackle Fuifatu Laumea, senior cornerback Bernard Griffin and senior defensive end Datone Jones, have also benefited. And younger Division I prospects Eduard Nevarez, a sophomore linebacker, as well as junior linebacker Byron Walker and junior defensive tackle/offensive guard Justin Brown, are expected to do so next season.

‘They’re all in track,’ Bryant said. ‘We know we have good speed if we get a crease.’
