It’s no coincidence that schools with successful boys’ track and field programs are often pretty slick on the football field too. Long Beach Poly, Riverside North, Los Angeles Loyola and Woodland Hills Taft are prime examples.

Rancho Cucamonga is on the verge of joining that group. Several members of the current football team led the Cougars to a third-place finish at the state track and field championships last June.

Charles Saseun, runner-up in the 100 meters at the state championships as a sophomore, plays wide receiver for the Cougars, and Saseun, defensive back William Scudder and running back Bobby Collins comprised three-quarters of the 400 relay team that finished fourth at state. Another defensive back, Artese Spicer, was on the state-qualifying 1,600 relay team with Scudder and Collins.

The Cougars will get their first test Friday night against La Quinta, the defending Desert Valley League champion, at Rancho Cucamongo Los Osos at 7 p.m. La Quinta Coach Dan Armstrong said the Blackhawks had trouble keeping up with a speedy opponent during a scrimmage last week.
