Hamani Stevens seems to take life at his own pace.

Hemet’s 6-foot-4, 290-pound two-way lineman, who is ranked 19th in the state -- regardless of position -- by rivals.com, committed to UCLA last June, then decommitted a few days later.

He was scheduled to attend Nike combines at USC and Stanford last summer, but ran into snags and never showed up. Then, he was one of the last athletes to arrive at the Oregon Nike camp, where he finally demonstrated enough skill to be named the top lineman.

I hope he’s more assertive Friday night against visiting Palm Springs.

Unlike Hemet, the Indians have played their season opener, losing to Fontana Miller last Friday night, 35-18. Palm Springs returns quarterback Steven Saunders, and he shook out some kinks while connecting nine times with wide receiver Theo Murrell, totaling 122 yards and a touchdown.

I predict Stevens will decide to arrive on time, but Palm Springs will bounce back and win this one, 27-20.
