With a dozen Long Beach Poly campus security men stationed at various points in the stands and approximately 20 officers from the Long Beach Police Department patrolling the field and the parking lots at the game between the Jackrabbits and Carson, Veterans Stadium was the most heavily secured site I’ve been to so far this season.

With a crowd of about 3,000 spectators on hand for Poly’s home opener, perhaps all the security personnel was needed.

‘It’s a big rivalry game. We want to be careful and safe,’ said Angel Diaz, a campus security officer who stood perched all game up on one of the visiting-team’s benches, facing the stands, radio at the ready in case police were needed to back up the crew in the stands.

As far as I could tell, their mission was accomplished, like Poly’s was with a 38-9 victory over the Colts.
