What season is this, anyway?

Was just sitting here scrolling through the football scores from last night -- I thought -- only now, I’m not so sure.

So far, there have been a few that look more like baseball scores. To wit:

Sylmar 9, El Camino Real 3, which I know really is football because it has a little (OT) at the end of it, instead of, say, (10 innings).

Also appearing to be a baseball score: Westchester 6, Washington 4. All Washington needed was another safety, and the teams would’ve been headed for extra innings...

After looking at that result, I thought I’d stumbled into basketball season, because then I ran into this one:

Gahr 62, Artesia 42, which I knew was a football score because Artesia was definitely on the wrong end of it.

The Pioneers, though, can take consolation in the fact that, hey, they only needed 49 more points to equal the record-tying total they had in beating Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, 91-64, in the Division III state championship basketball game last March.

Among the other basketball-like football scores:

Compton 55, Fremont 8, which wasn’t such a surprise, because Compton (4-0) has so far been an offensive juggernaut, seemingly scoring at will every week.

I’ve checked, though, and despite appearances, these are all football results. They have to be because it’s only September.
