Though football seems to steal the spotlight from other fall sports, the Inland Empire has two cross-country programs worth mentioning.

The Redlands girls’ team won the Iolani Invitional in Hawaii last weekend. The Terriers came into the meet ranked third in the state by the folks who put on the Nike Team Nationals each December.

The Murrieta Valley boys’ team, still reverberating from its shocking victory at the Irvine Woodbridge Invitational on Sept. 15, moved to No. 2 in the state rankings after beginning the season unranked.

Up next, by the way, is the Stanford Invitational, probably the top early-season meet on the West Coast.

One other performance worth mentioning -- the Elsinore girls’ volleyball team rallied to defeat Murrieta Valley on Saturday night to win the Nighthawk Invitational.
