Anyone who has made the increasingly long drive to Las Vegas over the years has seen Victorville grow from a dusty truck stop to one big shopping mall.

Tucked somewhere behind all that tile and stucco is Silverado High School, probably better known by males ages 18 to 34 as the alma mater of Ultimate Fighter II champion Joe Stevenson, but that’s not to say the football program doesn’t pack a punch too.

Silverado (2-2) will get a chance to get off the canvas Friday night against Arroyo Valley (3-0) at Victor Valley High.

The Hawks lost a tough one, 42-35, to host Bloomington last weekend, but sounds like the program is heading in the right direction, and I don’t mean north to Sin City. Silverado graduated most of its starters from last season’s team, which reached the Southern Section Eastern Division semifinals, and briefly lost its head coach, Carl Posey, and its defensive coordinator to other schools.

Posey was at cushy Rancho Bernardo High, but apparently missed his kids at Silverado so much, he came back.

If the Hawks can beat Arroyo Valley, it would be a nice pick-me-up heading into next week, when they get on the road to play an even tougher team, Chino Hills.

Speaking of getting on the road, when is that train gonna be built?
