Girls’ tennis: Valencia, Hammel making their marks

Placentia Valencia doesn’t necessarily come to mind when you think girls’ tennis powers in Orange County, but the Tigers were beaten only once last season and may be better this year.

Lou Ponsi did a nice interview with senior Stephanie Hammel, who has helped give the Tigers some of their bite. I was especially impressed that she used the word ‘subjective’ when she discussed rankings.

In all my years of covering high school, that is only the second time I recall it being used by a high school athlete. The only other person I remember using it was Jamie Oenning, a basketball player at Woodbridge and UCLA.
