Several back-up players did well enough last week to earn more time in the limelight.

North Torrance dropped its third game in row, 28-13, to Redondo on Thursday, but it wasn’t for lack of a running game. Kyle Cryer collected 244 yards and a touchdown after Coach Todd Croce shook up the lineup by putting the receiver at running back.

I wonder where he’ll play this week ... Coach?

In West Torrance’s 56-0 drubbing of Hawthorne, the Cougars had two guys, instead of only senior standout Brian Baucham, that they had to stop because junior reserve Aric Morales had 150 yards in 15 carries and scored three touchdowns. See the Daily Breeze account of Thursday’s game here.

Not bad for somebody playing behind the impressive-looking Baucham. Morales ought to be good for a few more carries in Friday’s 7 p.m. game at South Torrance.

It should be noted that the speedy and elusive Baucham, who set a school record in the 400-meter run as a sophomore, enjoyed his usual stellar performance with 200 yards and four touchdowns against Hawthorne before heading to the bench in the second half.

Erik Munzer, usually a wide receiver and free safety, did well while filling in for injured Beverly Hills quarterback Dex Lucci in the Normans’ last game, and sophomore receiver Kenny Bassett earned himself more chances with his play in Munzer’s usual spot, according to Beverly Hills Coach Carter Paysinger.
