Tustin comes into Week 5 with a less-than-sparkling 1-3 record. The three teams that beat the Tillers have a combined record of 11-0-1. But don’t despair, Tustin fans, as the Tillers are taking their lumps this year in anticipation of 2008.

‘We’re really young,’ said Coach Myron Miller. ‘I have a great running back who’s a sophomore who’s going to be big time. But we’re really young, and making the playoffs will be a great year.

‘But we’ll be really solid the next two years.’

The inconsistency of that youth was apparent in the 28-3 loss to Western. Three times the Tillers got inside the Western 20, only to turn over the ball.

The nucleus of the future is Anthony Wilkerson, the sophomore that Miller mentioned. Wilkerson is a fantastic athlete. ‘He was a starter on the basketball team as a freshman, he was the fastest kid on the track team, and his mom wouldn’t let him play freshman football but he would have started both ways,’ Miller said.

‘He’s 6-foot, 200 pounds, great grades, he’s the complete package. He’s a great back and a good linebacker. He’s a Division I guy who will make a name for himself in Orange County.’

Wilkerson gained a game-high 129 yards against Western (3-0-1).

Editor Bob: Since Rancho Verde had to forfeit its victories over Tustin and Yucaipa for using an ineligible player, the Tillers’ record improves to 2-2.
