The final drive of the nonleague game Friday night between Chaffey and La Quinta was something right out of a movie ... or a pick-up game on the neighborhood greenbelt.

Chaffey marched 77 yards in the final 1 minute 12 seconds and won, 30-28, on an 18-yard touchdown reception by Deveion Bauman as time expired. The most impressive aspect of the drive was how the Tigers moved the ball down the field, with quarterback Bryan Sanchez completing four of nine passes for 70 yards. Chaffey only averages three completions a game.

‘We don’t throw the ball much,’ Coach Chris Brown said. ‘Everything lined up right for us.’

The Chaffey receivers improvised on several plays, including the game-winning touchdown. Brown called a timeout and Bauman told him he thought he could use his four-inch height advantage to out-jump La Quinta’s best athlete, Kamani Harper. Sanchez rolled out and threw the ball toward the corner of the end zone, where Bauman snared it to improve the Tigers’ record to 4-0.

‘It was probably pass interference on both guys,’ Brown said. ‘They were grabbing and pushing ... it was a perfectly thrown ball.’

Bauman, a junior, scored two touchdowns on receptions, one on a kickoff return and another on an interception return.
