St. Paul senior running back Aubrey Haynes is expected to sit out the Swordsmen’s game tonight against visiting El Rancho with a sprained left ankle.

Without Haynes, a transfer from Diamond Ranch, St. Paul (3-1) will rely on junior Luis Garcia, who was the team’s primary rusher last season but has shared backfield duties this year.

The two players each contribute something different for St. Paul, which has lost only to Servite, 33-0, in its season opener. (Speaking of the Friars, check out Register columnist Marcia C. Smith’s story on assistant coach Kenny Bell.)

Garcia relies on speed and elusiveness, while Haynes is a bruising 5-foot-10, 225-pound power runner who St. Paul Coach Pete Gonzalez expects to play at a Division I school next year.

‘He’s given us a lot of options,’ Gonzalez said of Haynes. ‘They complement each other really well.’

Haynes will hardly be the only transfer at the game.

El Rancho has two transfers from St. Paul, junior running backs Marcus Aldecoa and and Marcus Galan, who have made their marks for the Dons (2-2). The Whittier Daily News previews the game here.

Aldecoa and Galan are among several transfers who have contributed to El Rancho’s rebuilding efforts under first-year Coach Gene Parsons, after the Dons went 0-10 last season.

This game offers a chance to see who made the right moves.
