Concord De La Salle is the class of Northern California. The Spartans reached the Division I state bowl game last season, and are the favorites to do so again this season. After their 35-7 victory over Mission Viejo on Saturday, Coach Bob Ladouceur said the future is pretty bright, too. At least, he implied as much.

‘I have a lot of young guys, a good mix of young and inexperienced kids on the field,’ said Ladouceur. ‘I think once these younger kids play a couple more games, we’ll be in good shape.’

De La Salle’s starting quarterback, Blake Wayne, is a junior. He completed both his passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns, including a quick slant that covered 85 yards. Running the veer option, he carried 14 times for 48 yards.

One of De La Salle’s primary running backs was also a junior, Kylan Butler, who carried 12 times for 112 yards and one touchdown, a leap over the line of scrimmage on fourth and one.

De La Salle’s offensive line was all seniors, though.

Mission Viejo won the junior varsity game, 38-7. But, before you get too excited, CalHiSports.com executive editor Mark Tennis reminded me that two years ago, Mission Viejo won by a similar score, too.
