Roger Anderson has seen an elite girls’ basketball program up close from the assistant’s seat, and this season will lead his own program as the successor to Kevin Kiernan at Troy.

Anderson has been the head coach the past few seasons at Colony, but before that he had been an assistant to Jeff Sink at Brea Olinda.

Anderson’s appointment to the Troy job would seem to be a natural fit. Even at Colony, he had an elite program approach. He raised the level of competition in the Titans’ nonleague schedule, and he began a tournament that quickly established itself as one of the best in the Southland, particularly the Inland Empire.

Last season, Colony finished 18-14 but it reached the Southern Section Division III-AA finals before losing to Silverado, 64-52.

Troy has set the gold standard for girls’ basketball in Orange County this decade. The Warriors were 26-2 and seeded third in the Division I-AA playoffs, but were upset in the quarterfinals by Santa Margarita. Still, Troy had won three state titles in the previous four seasons under Kiernan, who left after the season to coach at Mater Dei.
