Some Orange County things that were worth watching over the weekend:

  • Josh Hawkins of Anaheim Canyon rushed for 304 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-13 win over Laguna Hills. It’s the first time the victorious Comanches have failed to score between 46 and 49 points.
  • Clark Evans rushed for 230 yards and four second-half touchdowns for Los Alamitos in its 34-26 victory over Santa Monica. This was the most surprising score of the weekend. Did anyone outside Santa Monica think the Griffins would trail going into the fourth quarter? Did Santa Monica?
  • Rap Dantic carried 23 times for 240 yards and scored three touchdowns for Magnolia in its 56-38 victory over Loara. Magnolia has now scored more points in five games (191) than it did last year in 10 games (184).
  • Andy McDonald threw four touchdown passes, three to J.B. Green, for Newport Harbor in its 39-30 victory over Mira Costa. The Sailors have averaged 36 points since losing to Long Beach Poly.
  • Ray Holley rushed for 221 yards and had three touchdowns for El Modena in its 27-17 victory over Fullerton. Through five games, Holley now has 1,000 yards rushing and has scored 18 touchdowns.
  • Backup quarterback Juan Ortiz completed three of his four passes, with touchdowns of 35, 66 and 45 yards, to lead Westminster to a 35-7 victory over previously undefeated Santa Ana Valley. The Lions had gone 10 quarters without scoring.
  • Froylan Garcia had four interceptions for Santa Ana in its 47-6 victory over Westminster La Quinta. The Southern Section record for interceptions is five, but four will get the job done most nights.
  • Anaheim took advantage of six turnovers and scored a 17-7 victory over Garden Grove Santiago despite the absence of running back Matt Contreras and quarterback Vincent Gomez for disciplinary reasons. It’s the second year in a row Anaheim was undefeated in nonleague games.
  • Robbie Picazo passed for 209 yards and two touchdowns for Tesoro in its 17-10 victory over El Toro. With its second victory under new Coach Brian Barnes, the Titans have one more victory than last year.
  • Kyle Walker of Ocean View scored from five yards with 2:59 remaining to give the Sea Hawks a 27-26 victory over Estancia. Since 2001, and probably beyond that, the Sea Hawks (4-1) hadn’t won more than three games.
