When Locke began the 2007 season five weks ago, Coach Wayne Crawford expected his biggest issue would be waiting on his young offensive line to mature.

‘I knew there would be growing pains,’ Crawford said, ‘and sometimes the emphasis would be on pain.’

But what has hurt the 0-5 Saints even more has been the revolving situation at quarterback.

The first three players Crawford has tried at the position -- Lamonta Green, Rhomell Holliman and Kerronie White -- did not played well, to say the least.

Green had six passes interecepted and eight fumbles. Holliman completed only two of 12 passes with three interceptions. White suffered only one interception, but he didn’t do much else with his opportunity.

‘The quarterback play, to be honest, has been horrendous,’ Crawford said. ‘I gave all three a shot. But we’ve been getting too many mistakes at the quarterback position. The unsettledness at that position has been a big problem.’

Last week, Crawford put Tim Boykins, a junior defensive back and kick returner, under center. Boykins could not keep the Saints from losing to Narbonne 33-6, but he did complete six of eight passes and scored Locke’s lone touchdown . Just as important, Boykins did not have a turnover.

So he will get the start against Crenshaw this week in the Coliseum League opener for both teams.

But if Boykins doesn’t work out, Crawford may seek volunteers from the stands.
