If you’re heading out to the Palm Springs area this weekend, maybe to play a little golf or see how long Michelle Wie, pictured right, lasts at the Samsung World Championships, I thought I’d alert you to a nightspot where you can find bright lights, loud music, cold beverages and maybe even a soft pretzel.

That’s right, Palm Springs (2-3) is hosting Palm Desert (3-2) in a Desert Valley League opener Friday night at 7, and this game will likely play a major role in determining the league’s top three finishers.

Now, I’m still thinking La Quinta (3-2) is the team to beat in the DVL. The Blackhawks have more than prepped themselves with nonleague games against Murrieta Valley, Colton and Chaffey, each better than the second-best DVL team, but Palm Desert and Palm Springs are no gimmies.

The Aztecs played unbeaten Serrano closer than any team this season, losing by 15 points in front of the Diamondbacks’ earsplitting home crowd, but I think I’ll give the edge to Palm Springs in this game. I usually don’t look too deep into comparitive scores, but the Indians won by 46 points at Hemet on Sept. 7, while Palm Desert won by 19 at Hemet on Sept. 28. That’s too big a margin to ignore.

The league’s most valuable player through the nonleague portion of the schedule would undoubtedly be Kamani Harper of La Quinta. The senior running back/defensive back/kick returner rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns in the 30-28 loss to Chaffey two weeks ago, accounting for 77% of his team’s offense.

If only Wie had that percentage off the tee.....
