If there’s another Inland Empire football program that looks more like a square peg than Colton, Id’ like to know. The only team in the San Andreas League not located in San Bernardino, the Yellowjackets are also head and shoulders above the rest of the SAL in terms of coaching, talent and strength of nonleague schedule.

I guess you can figure out which team I like to win the title.

Colton has the league’s best player in Damien Holmes, a tight end/fullback/defensive end who has committed to UCLA. Holmes, who leads his team in tackles, sacks and receiving, is the most athletic two-way end I’ve seen since Chris Barrett of Tustin.

Colton running back/cornerback Travell Washington and quarterback/free safety Daniel Sorensen are also among the top three skill players in the SAL.

The Yellowjackets (2-3) do have one major knock on their resume, a 21-14 loss at La Quinta three weeks ago. They’ve also lost close games to Redlands East Valley and Los Osos, but they weren’t expected to beat those opponents.

If there’s a game to watch in the SAL this season, you might as well circle Friday night’s opener between Colton and host Cajon. The Cowboys (1-4) have also played a tough nonleague schedule, losing to Los Osos, Bloomington, Sultana and Alta Loma. They won’t defeat Colton, but they should get past host Arroyo Valley (3-1-1) on Oct. 26 in a game that will likely determine second place.

As far as the rest of the round pegs, they’ll be playing for fourth place.
