Rim of the World figures to get a stiffer test this week than last when on Friday night it visits Serrano in a Mojave River League opener. The Fighting Scots (5-1) traveled to winless Costa Mesa last Friday, but probably should have stayed on the mountain, considering the competition.

Six players were suspended for Costa Mesa, three others quit during the week and another was kicked off the team. With a 38-0 lead at the half, Rim of the World played its junior varsity team in the second half and still shut out the Mustangs, 44-0.

What a way for Costa Mesa to celebrate homecoming. Where’s the school dance, in a wrecking yard?

The Fighting Scots will next face a program that’s headed in the opposite direction. Serrano (6-0, 1-0 in the MRL) has outscored its opponents, 211-67, this season, and four of them -- Etiwanda, Palm Desert, Colony and Silverado -- are among the best in their respective leagues.

It might be a good thing that the Fighting Scots rested up last weekend.
