Chris Brown might have been the best-kept secret in Ventura County heading into the football season but word spread quickly as the Newbury Park junior started piling up rushing yardage in chunks.

The 6-foot-1, 189-pound transfer from Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills has gained more than 200 yards on the ground in back-to-back games for the traditionally pass-happy Panthers (6-0 overall), and don’t be surprised if Brown makes it three in a row during Friday’s Marmonte League contest at Calabasas (1-5).

Perhaps a league rushing title is in his future. Darrell Scott’s departure from Moorpark to Ventura St. Bonaventure over the summer certainly increased Brown’s chances. Only Simi Valley’s Langston Jackson and Thousand Oaks’ Jon Lister stand in the way now and neither has provided much opposition.

Brown emerged as the front-runner, no pun intended, early on this season and hasn’t slowed since, rushing for a league-high 894 yards and 12 touchdowns in 153 carries. And the talk about him, once nonexistent, hasn’t slowed either.
