There’s been a lot of news out of St. Anthony this week, what with the recent hiring of James Anderson as the girls’ basketball coach, but here’s some more regarding the Saints’ football team.

Senior Austin Muhleka will be making his 30th career start at quarterback when St. Anthony (4-2, 1-0) plays Murphy tonight/Friday in a Santa Fe League game at St. Bernard. He earned his first start in the seventh game of his freshman season, starting three games that year, and went 4-7 as a sophomore and 3-7 last year. His development has been crucial to the Saints’ turnaround this season.

‘It’s pretty impressive,’ said Coach Brian Walsh, who is also St. Anthony’s athletic director. ‘He’s very savvy. He’s had the ability to pick things up, and he’s able to spread the ball around to a lot of different people.’

Muhleka, who averages slightly more than 206 passing yards a game, has thrown completions to nine receivers, including five with 11 or more catches. Junior tight end Mika Yandall leads the Saints with 18 receptions for 225 yards, while Lamont Rowe and Chris Mendiola each have caught 16 passes for 239 yards and 233 yards, respectively.
