Trailing Millikan, 17-13, going into the fourth quarter, Lakewood rallied to score 27 points in the final 8 minutes 40 seconds and beat the Rams, 40-17, in a Moore League game Friday night at Lakewood.

Each of the Lancers’ last three touchdowns was set by a Millikan turnover.

The Lancers (5-3, 3-1) benefited from two fumble recoveries and two interceptions made in the fourth quarter, when Lakewood junior running back Alex Fletcher scored on runs of 11, 20 and two yards.

Fletcher also had a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that gave the Lancers their first lead of the game at 6-3.

Junior linebacker Ryan Walker recovered a fumble and returned it 40 yards for Lakewood’s last score with 25 seconds to play.

The Lakewood defense, however, was spearheaded by senior nose guard Simon Sauni, who wreaked havoc on the Rams by making an interception, a fumble recovery and two sacks.

With the victory, the Lancers retained possession of the perennial Donice Hamilton trophy for the sixth year in a row.

Millikan (5-2, 2-2), attempting to rebound from a 28-14 loss to Long Beach Poly last week, instead suffered its second setback after opening the season with five consecutive victories.
