Here’s a quick geography quiz: What’s the third-largest city in California (hint: the answer is in the question itself)?

Well, if you were thinking land area instead of population, then the answer is none other than that out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere desert haven known as California City, pictured left from a bird’s-eye view.

And since it’s the third-largest city in the state, it’s about time it had its own high school. That will finally happen next fall, when California City High opens its doors. In the upcoming years, it will compete in the High Desert League (somewhere Erik Estrada is smiling).

Unfortunately, that means Mojave, which gets a bulk of its students from California City, will see a significant drop in its enrollment according to the AV Press. As a result, its football team will have to leave the High Desert League and may become a freelance or eight-man team. The AV Press also examines the possibility of the Mustangs joining the Desert Mountain League.

Of course, if that Space Port thing ever gets off the ground, maybe Mojave will be more than just a truck stop on the way to Bishop or Mammoth.
