Shane Walker, meet Roy Riegels.

I imagine you’re still feeling a little red-faced around your Perris teammates after what happened with three minutes left Thursday night against Elsinore (that headline probably doesn’t help), but Riegels, pictured left, did the same thing while playing for California almost 80 years ago, and that gaffe occurred during the Rose Bowl.

Good thing is, Riegels came back to be team captain the next year, led a successful life after college and is now in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. The play is also credited with bringing increased popularity to college football.

Actually, I hope your mistake doesn’t make high school football more popular. It’s already tough enough to find a parking spot.

It’s kind of odd that California is playing in the Rose Bowl today. Maybe you can just say you were honoring Riegels.
