You’ve gotta love Redondo Coach Gene Simon’s description of his team.

‘I think our team is a little like a good detective novel,’ he said. ‘We keep giving little hints of what could happen next.’

The Sea Hawks started their season with a tough loss to Mission Viejo, the No. 15 team in The Times’ rankings, then posted a 20-13 victory over Serra, ranked No. 6 in the Northwest Division coaches’ poll, but suffered a 38-28 loss to Culver City, the top-ranked team in the Western Division, after leading the Centaurs, 21-17, going into the fourth quarter.

Last week, they soaked up a key 19-6 victory over previously unbeaten West Torrance (5-1-1, 0-1-1) in a Bay League game at West Torrance. Read the Daily Breeze‘s version of events.

The result put the Sea Hawks (4-3, 2-0) in the driver’s seat in the Bay League with three games to play, including one against Leuzinger (5-2, 1-1) on Friday at Redondo.

A Bay League title would be a first for Redondo, which won Ocean League titles in 2002 and 2003.

‘It’s a real big deal,’ Simon said. ‘It’s a great league. Everybody has a shot at it right now. We’ve always believed we could win it, but there’s more reason to believe now, when you have evidence of it.’

The Sea Hawks’ best Bay League finish in recent years was a runner-up showing behind Peninsula in 2004 after they lost to the Panthers, 35-33.

This time, Redondo is hungry and tasting a title.

‘We’ve been dropping little hints that we have more in us,’ Simon said. ‘It’s nice to see it come out.’
