The Daily News caught up yesterday with Saugus quarterback Desi Rodriguez, whose family was awakened at 6 a.m. by a neighbor and told to evacuate.

Rodriguez, a junior, then returned to the family’s house to recover some items, but experienced a thick layer of smoke on his way there. He returned to the school for film session, but with half the players displaced or unreachable, Coach Jason Bornn canceled the session. Saugus, and many high schools in that area, have canceled practices and other athletic events through today because of unhealthy air quality. It’s uncertain if the decision will be extended beyond today.

Rodriguez is one of many people who are currently affected by the fires.
