A spectacular full moon is rising here at Upland High. It’s as orange as a pumpkin because of the smoke in the area, but I’ve been assured by Upland boys’ Athletic Director Jim Drake that the AQMD figures for the area are low enough that I will be able to walk the sidelines without passing out from lack of oxygen.

By the way ,Orange County, the skies are even more clear down there, at least from Orange to Brea. I drove by Cal State Fullerton, where Servite was supposed to be playing JSerra tonight and just shook my head.

Drake told me that Upland running back Tim Hanson is a game-time decision because of a knee injury. Hanson is the team’s leading rusher and second-leading receiver. His absence would put even more pressure on quarterback Josh Nunes in his showdown with Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut -- both tall, strong-armed juniors.

Drake also told me the Highlanders stayed in condition by renting out an indoor soccer and basketball facility down the road. They practiced there Tuesday through Thursday. No wonder they didn’t want to put this game off. Just kidding, Jim.
