San Fernando’s Tom Hernandez has done one of his best coaching jobs under trying circumstances.

Hernandez’s wife, Norma, died on Sept. 24 from complications with lupus. She was buried on Sept. 28, the day of San Fernando’s football game against El Camino Real. Hernandez still keenly feels the loss but said ‘every day is a little better. You have to go on. I’m lucky it’s football season so I don’t have to think about it too much.’

His team (5-3, 3-0), led by junior quarterback Rashaad Reynolds, pictured above, is currently on top of the Valley Mission League. If the Tigers win Friday’s game at Reseda (6-2, 1-2), they lock up at least a share of the title. It would be their second league championship in the last three years.

It won’t be easy -- Reseda has won three of the last four meetings. But nothing about this season has been easy.
