Norwalk junior running back Jose Guzman is small in stature but has been a big part of the Lancers’ offense.

He is on course to hit the 1,000-yard mark in rushing for the season tonight/Monday when Norwalk (5-3, 3-1) plays Mayfair (4-3, 3-0) in a Suburban League game at Excelsior High. The game was postponed from last week because of the Southland’s wildfires and subsequent air-quality concerns.

Guzman, 5 feet 5 and 150 pounds, has rushed for 993 yards and nine touchdowns in 108 carries. If he surpasses 1,000 yards, he will be the Lancers’ second rusher to do so this season. Robert Penny, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior, hit the mark in Norwalk’s last game, a 42-21 victory over Artesia on Oct. 19.

As close as Guzman is to the milestone, he will still need to get past a Mayfair team that goes into the game having won three in a row.

In addition, Norwalk has not beaten the Monsoons in Suburban League play since 1994.
