I knew exactly when Servite arrived for its Trinity League game at St. John Bosco.

I could hear the Friars’ bagpipe corps, tuning up their instruments by measuring the tone and clarity of each and every pipe with a handy, dandy hand-held pitch meter that resembles a compass.

‘They’re a pain to tune,’ said Trevor Bates, a junior at Western High who is part of the drum corps in the Westminster-based Nicholson Pipes and Drums group that has performed at every Servite game this year.

Having company while performing at games is a switch for Tucker Fleming, an adult member of the group who, until this season, served as the Friars’ lone bagpiper.

‘I’m not even Catholic -- sshh,’ Fleming said with a chuckle.

‘It’s fun having other people here to warm up and play with.’
