Judging by the number of cars, Canyon-Saugus should be great

When I covered the Canyon-Crespi game a few weeks back, I had a lot of trouble finding a parking space at Canyon High. Eventually, I found a spot in a neighborhood off Camp Plenty Road, but I got a couple of not-so-nice looks from the locals who weren’t too thrilled about a 2001 Ford Focus parked in front of the houses.

But I knew my car would be safe -- after all it’s a Ford Focus.

Unfortunately, my back wasn’t safe from the half-mile long uphill trek I had to make with my laptop over my shoulder [I know, I’m a weakling].

I learned my lesson this week -- I arrived more than hour before kickoff between Canyon and Saugus and I found a nice parking spot not too far from the school.

And good thing I arrived extra early because there was already a homecoming-sized mass of people here waiting for the start of the game in the abnormally-warm night air. The Saugus band is already orbiting the field and there are mobs of students everywhere.

I guess everyone in town wants to know if a surging Saugus team (7-1, 3-0), ranked No. 16 by The Times, can beat the Foothill League’s reigning champion, No. 22 Canyon (4-4, 2-1), which is coming off a taxing two weeks because of the local wildfires and a change on the coaching staff.

We’ll see how it all unfolds in the next three hours or so.
