Compton -- and senior running back Donald Green, in particular -- is sore, but the sun came up Saturday and the Tarbabes survived a 42-14 beating by Long Beach Poly in a Moore League battle for first place Friday night at Compton.

Green suffered a couple of broken ribs and is expected to sit out the Tarbabes’ next game Friday at Lakewood. Although he went to a hospital after being injured and was told not play for two or three weeks, Green is aiming for a return by the time playoffs start.

And the Tarbabes (8-1, 4-1) will make the playoffs.

‘We just got to put this one behind us and move on,’ said Green, who took a hit with a helmet to the ribs in the third quarter after rushing for more than 100 yards in the first half.

Compton led 8-0 early on and was still within 14-8 at the break, but Poly (8-1, 5-0), ranked sixth in the Southland by The Times and in the state, won its 72nd league game in a row with a strong second half. Read Eric Sondheimer’s story about the game here.

‘Poly is what they’ve always been -- physical and tough to beat. They try to wear you down, and they did,’ Compton Coach Calvin Bryant said. ‘They’re going to go far in the playoffs, and they’ll be hard to beat. But I still hope maybe we’ll get another opportunity to play them again down the line.’
