Culver City’s show goes on, anyway

All the signs were there, so I knew: I was definitely somewhere near Hollywood.

On my way to see some Culver City players a couple days ago, I got an eyeful of picket signs being held up at several sites along Sepulveda and Culver boulevards by striking members of the Writers Guild of America.

Television writers are in a bargaining battle with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers over payments for new and repeat downloads of shows over the internet and on electronic devices like iPods.

As a result of the strike, now also being supported and promoted by actors and producers, there is concern that many of network television’s top shows, including ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘ER’ and ‘Lost,’ will run out of new episodes to air in the coming days and weeks of the current TV season. I have a suggestion for that for anyone looking for something to watch besides reruns: Take in a Culver City game, or any high school game or match.

The plot lines are good, and the shows being put on by many of the Southland’s best teams are a hit -- at least as good as ‘Desperate Housewives,’ ‘The Office,’ and the like.

For example, the Centaurs (9-0, 4-0), I know, are headed for the playoffs once they close out their regular season with a 7 p.m. game Friday at Beverly Hills (4-4-1, 3-1).

And the way Culver City quarterback Darius Banks and running back Lowell Rose and Co. have been playing lately, they are likely to be up and running longer than some of your favorite TV shows.

So, go ahead. In the annual spirit of TV Guide, take a sneak peek at some of these teams. You might end up watching the whole show.
