Who was celebrating more Friday night, Dean or Mike Herrington?

Dean, in only his second year as coach at Mission Hills Alemany, saw his team pull out a 22-21 victory over West Hills Chaminade on a two-point conversion run by Antonio Bray with 1:05 left to win a share of the Mission League title.

Brother Mike, in his 19th year at Newhall Hart, saw kicker Johnny MacArthur make a 29-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to give Hart a 24-21 victory over Saugus and the Foothill League title.

Dean’s accomplishment is more stunning. Hired away from College of the Canyons with big bucks from Alemany, Dean’s team won its first four games last season, then lost the last six, losing every Mission League game. This season, the team is 7-3, and he’s worth every penny he gets.

Mike should ask for a raise, too, considering Hart is the top dog and everyone keeps trying to take the Indians out. But he has to take a backseat to his younger brother, whose expertise in running the spread offense has returned Alemany’s program to championship form in warp-speed time.
