If there are any college recruiters in need of an offensive lineman, Kyle Cook of Santa Ana Mater Dei should be on the list of prospects. At 6 feet 5, 260 pounds, Cook sure looked like a major-college prospect the way he handled D.J. Shoemate of Anaheim Servite last week.

Besides being one of he Southland’s top running backs, Shoemate, pictured left getting tackled by Mater Dei’s Michael Brown, is also one of its quickest, toughest pass rushers. He had trouble getting to the quarteback when he was double-teamed but also when Cook took him on, one-on-one, during the Monarchs’ 38-13 victory.

Cook has a 3.6 grade-point average and has been overshadowed because Mater Dei’s No. 1 lineman is Khaled Holmes. But make no mistake about Cook’s talent. Anyone who can block the way he did against Shoemate can play at the next level.

‘I believe something good is going to happen,’ Coach Bruce Rollinson said. ‘He’s the unsung hero.’
