With the high school basketball season right around the corner, I figured it was time to check in with coach Terry Kelly over at Campbell Hall, so I called him this morning and we chatted for about 10 minutes. He was in good spirits, as always. Come to think of it, I’d be upbeat too if I had UCLA-bound Jrue Holiday, pictured, one of the top players in the nation, coming back for his senior season and my team appeared poised to make another run at the Division IV state title.

‘We’re excited. We’re ready to get things started,’’ Kelly said. ‘Jrue is going to have to carry us for a while, but we have enough talent around him to make things interesting again. We live for basketball around here.’’

The Vikings open up the season in less than two weeks as hosts of the sixth annual Campbell Hall Coaches vs. Cancer Classic tournament and will face Hollywood, a team they should defeat by 30-plus points. If not, there’s something wrong. Beyond that, they’ll play in two other tournaments before Olympic League play begins in early January. Somehow, I have a feeling I’ll be talking to Kelly plenty this season and talking about Campbell Hall even more.
