His journey brings music to my ears

Brian Walsh’s odyssey makes me hear music. Maybe it’s ‘Long and Winding Road.’ (That’s the Beatles, young people. Please tell me you’ve heard of the Beatles.) Or maybe, if I listen closely, I hear ‘Highway to Hell.’ (Uh, AC/DC? Oh, never mind)

Coach Walsh and his St. Anthony football squad trekked well beyond L.A., over low desert, then into high desert, then up curvy inclines into mountains -- into the Paris Hilton-thin air of Mammoth. The final tally: a six-hour bus ride.

Then, finally, Coach Walsh’s Saints took the field and battled an altitude change (8,500-feet up) and the frosty temps (mid-30’s) and lost to Mammoth, 41-14, Friday night in the Northeast Division’s first round of the postseason.

After the game, it was back on the bus, and the 330-mile voyage home ended today at 5 in the morning. At that hour, Walsh and his coaching crew found an office, sat down and began chatting about nothing else than ... next football season.

Wait, now I hear another song when I think of Walsh’s quest for a title next year: ‘Running Down a Dream.’ (Tom Petty -- you’ve heard of him, young people, right? Ah, fuhgettabout it.)
