Edison, Lutheran give credit where it’s due

It seemed like a very uncharacteristic performance Friday by Orange Lutheran in its 28-16 victory over Edison. The Lancers lost the turnover battle for only the second time this season -- the other was their 28-13 loss to Servite -- and they seemed to have some penalties that just seemed out of place for a team that’s as disciplined as they are.

Instead of typical coach-speak, saying ‘We had a bad game,’ Lutheran Coach Jim Kunau, pictured, gave credit to Edison.

‘I thought the key was overcoming adversity, adversity being their good play and our mistakes,’ Kunau said.

‘I thought we were a little bit out of sync at times, but whenever you manage to overcome adversity, it’s a good sign. Sometimes it gets overlooked, but the reason teams are out of sync is because other teams do a good job and they get you a little bit out of sync. People say ‘You had an off night.’ Well, it’s because the other team made you have an off night. So I just give Edison credit.’

Edison played Lutheran tough, and converted two turnovers into nine points.

The Chargers got inside the 10-yard line late in the third quarter, but had to settle for a field goal to cut their deficit to 21-16.

‘We needed a touchdown, but you’ve got to get something out of that,’ Edison Coach Dave White said. ‘It put us down five points. We get a stop and score, we win the game.... It was a close game and they made a few more plays than we did.’
