Coach Garrett remains cagey about Crenshaw’s chances

Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett puts the ‘C’ in coy.

I believe Garrett is sincere when he calls Birmingham, the team Crenshaw plays Friday in a Championship Division semifinal, ‘the best team in the City.’ Press him about what Crenshaw (8-4) can do, however, and Garrett keeps repeating ‘I just hope they keep the score down on us.’

Of course, host Birmingham should be favored. The topseeded Patriots (11-1) have not been challenged by any City team they’ve faced this year. Yet, I believe the fourth-seeded Cougars (8-4) have a shot; they are playing as well as anyone at this point in the season.

I also think Garrett enjoys what his team has accomplished so far. He almost admitted as much after the Cougars beat Narbonne last week. ‘If you had told me back in August that we would reach the semifinals, I wouldn’t have taken that bet,’ he said. ‘It’s through hard work and determination from the kids that we are here. ‘
