Since it’s a gimme that Corona Centennial and Redlands East Valley will meet in the Inland Division championship game next week, I figured it’s a good time to lobby those responsible for the state bowl championship bids.

As an impartial and unenthusiastic observer assigned to cover the I.E. this fall, the winner between Centennial and REV deserves to be the SoCal representative for the Division I state bowl championship. No ifs, and or buts.

The argument is easy for Centennial. I usually don’t put a lot of weight in common opponents, but the Huskies beat Crespi by three touchdowns in mid-September, two weeks after Crespi beat Birmingham by two touchdowns. By my math, that makes the Huskies five touchdowns better than Birmingham.

Not even the most hardened City Section fan (you listenin’ Narbonne Nation?) can cyber-argue with me on that one.

But I get the feeling REV might get short-changed even if it finds a way to beat Centennial next week, and that’s a real possibility, considering the Wildcats have the type of offense that can keep up with Centennial’s no-huddle scoring machine.

Again, I’m not a big fan of common opponents, but REV defeated host Norco, 38-7, last week. Centennial won at Norco two weeks earlier, 43-7. They also had similar blowouts vs. visiting Dominguez early in the season. If the Huskies are five touchdowns better than Birmingham, and even with REV, then......you make the call.

I realize Long Beach Poly is also in the mix, but the Jackrabbits lost to Birmingham and, besides, there’s no way they’re winning the Pac-5 title. They were lucky to get this far. If Orange Lutheran doesn’t expose Poly this weekend, the winner of Crespi-Servite surely will.

That’s all you need to know.
