While our blogger, Jaime Cardenas, was making his way to a Kinkos to file his Web-only game story, he did manage to phone in results from the Southern California Regional Division II championship girls’ volleyball match tonight at Mira Costa High.

To nobody’s surprise, the top-seeded Mustangs (34-0) defeated their Bay League rivals, second-seeded Redondo, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, to qualify for Saturday’s state finals.

Sophomore Falyn Fonoimoana led Mira Costa with 27 kills and senior Pauline Acres added 14. Senior Lauren Law had 29 digs and senior Kendall Bateman contributed 59 assists.

Senior Devon Dykstra had nine kills, 17 digs and three blocks for Redondo (38-10), and teammate Megan Saraceno, also a senior, tallied 12 kills and 10 digs.

Mira Costa will be seeking its fourth consecutive state title when it plays Northern California Regional winner San Jose Mitty, also the top-seeded team, in the Division II final at 7 p.m. at San Jose State.

Redondo hasn’t had much luck against Mira Costa this season, dropping two league matches and then losing in the Southern Section Division II-A final, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22, on Nov. 17.

Last season, the Sea Hawks upset Mira Costa in the section final, only to lose in the regional final to the Mustangs, who went on to beat Mitty, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22, for their third consecutive state Division II final. Mira Costa also won the Division I title in 2004.
