I’d like to think I’ve done a good job, a fair job, of highlighting, or at least mentioning, nearly every running back worthy of recognition in Ventura County this season, with the exception of one, Malcolm Jones of Oaks Christian. The thing is, I knew I’d get around to him at some point.

Few have been as consistent. The sophomore has rushed for 1,582 yards and scored 22 touchdowns in 11 games heading into the Lions’ Northern Division playoff semifinal against longtime rival Oak Park on Friday night. The only time Jones hasn’t gained 100 or more yards on the ground was in the game against Santa Paula in which he finished with 88 and that’s because the game was a blowout -- a 55-8 victory in a playoff opener.

Aside from that blemish, he’s had has some impressive individual efforts. Jones finished with 129 yards rushing, 74 yards receiving and three touchdowns in a 36-20 victory against Muir. Then, there were his 255 all-purpose yards and two scores in a 42-6 victory over Nordhoff to help the Lions secure a share of the Tri-Valley League title. I could go on and on.

Sure, it might have taken me a while to give Jones the credit he deserves. But trust me, he’s received plenty of attention since replacing Marc Tyler as the Lions’ featured back. The recruiting services, Rivals.com and Scout.com, watch every step he makes. So do the NCAA Division I scouts. Jones is a force now, and I imagine will only get better in time. Good things come to those who wait.
