Not many realize this, but Bishop Diego High is located in Santa Barbara. Even fewer people are aware of the fact the Cardinals have a pretty good football team, a group that continues to be one of the better stories of the Southern Section playoffs heading into Saturday’s Mid-Valley Division championship game against Santa Clara.

Winning the first two postseason games by a combined score of 81-0 opened some eyes. Then Bishop Diego proved the victories weren’t a fluke by defeating top-seeded Paraclete, 12-6, in the semifinals.

Bishop Diego and Santa Clara know each other well, having already met once, with the Frontier League title at stake in late October. Santa Clara prevailed in a 42-41 thriller. The Cardinals will have revenge on their minds, to be sure. A victory would, no doubt, put them on the map, finally silencing all the questions about who they are and where they’re from.
