One of the early surprises of the winter season, at least to me, is the Riverside King boys’ basketball team.

The Wolves captured the Cerritos Gahr tournament Saturday with a 69-67 victory over Bishop Montgomery, ranked No. 11 in the preseason by The Times. A day earlier, King knocked off No. 13 Los Alamitos, 67-59.

I know what some of you in the I.E. are thinking. These victories weren’t so much upsets as they were shoddy rankings. Don’t worry. I speak to the person responsible for our top 25 on an hourly basis, and he’s never out of my sight. Just because he hasn’t seen a high school basketball game since March doesn’t mean he isn’t on top of what’s going on out there.

By the way, how’s Renardo Sidney doing at Artesia this season?
