City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege has rejected an attempt by brothers Mat and Willie Hankins to gain their basketball eligibility after transferring from Sylmar to Van Nuys.

Fiege declared the brothers ineligibility under the new state CIF transfer rule that bars students from following a former coach to a new school. Former Sylmar assistant Charles White is the new basketball coach at Van Nuys. Mat, a senior, and Willie, a junior, had to prove they were not recruited to Van Nuys.

The Hankins brothers can appeal Fiege’s decision to a CIF appeals panel. Fiege also is considering the eligibility of two other former Sylmar players, Victor Rudd and Guy Landry, who transferred to Van Nuys. And a group of Reseda basketball players who transferred from Woodland Hills Taft are also under scrutiny.
