There are tournaments in which the host team loads its schedule with softies to make sure it wins or at least gets to the final.

That is not an issue at the Westchester Tip-Off Classic. The host Comets (2-0) may have picked up stress-free victories over Birmingham (0-2), and Hawthorne (5-2). But if they get past Bishop Montgomery (5-1) in a Friday semifinal, there’s a potential championship matchup against either Dominguez (2-0) or Taft (1-0) on Saturday. Both Dominguez and Taft were playing quarterfinal games Thursday night.

Even so, Westchester Coach Ed Azzam is satisfied with what he’s seen so far.

‘I like the fact we’ve carried the practices over to the games,’ Azzam said. ‘The keys right now are the guards, Oscar Bellfield, Dominique O’Connor and Jarred Dubois, because they get everything going, and [forward] Dwayne Polee on the outside and [center] Cordell Hadnot on the inside.

‘There’s a good chemistry. They’ve shown they’re willing to share the ball and work well together defensively.’
