There’s no such thing as a free program, either

We have a winner at Orange Coast College.

And it’s me.

Turns out that I showed up with $1.29 in my pocket, well short of the $5 necessary to purchase a program for the El Dorado-Trabuco Hills Southwest Division final.

The young lady selling the program assured me she was not authorized to give out a free program. I advised her to get someone on the phone who was. She called somebody and the young lady repeated
What she heard on the other end of the line: ‘No free programs.’

That’s where Arcelia Howell entered the story. Aware of my plight because she overheard my explanation of my lack of funds and identifying myself (with official dyed-in-the wool L.A. Times ID badge) and stating my purpose, this good samaritan bought two programs and gave me one. She’s there to support Trabuco. I’ll try to remain unbiased, but I owe the Mustangs one.

El Dorado just kicked off and smothered the returner at the 11.

We’re under way.
