The kid stood on the middle of the field -- frozen, just gaping into the haze of the stadium lights. He shook his head as he gasped out one word: ‘Sad.’ This was Brandon Mims, the star quarterback for the Palmdale Falcons, moments after his team felt the crushing 42-14 loss to the St. Paul Swordsmen for the Western Division crown Friday night.

‘Overlooked them, overlooked them,’ he repeated, his voice whispery soft. ‘Thought we could come in here and blow them out but we overlooked them.’
