A coach’s bad behavior makes us angry or confused or sad -- or often makes us all three.

A West Torrance walk-on coach was arrested last week in suspicion on handcuffing and tying up girls, ages 13 to 17, at his home and on campus. Detectives arrested 51-year-old coach Michael Anthony Smith after a girl’s boyfriend reported him to school officials, according to the Daily Breeze.

Smith worked at West Torrance for nine years, serving as a coach with the boys’ freshman basketball team, freshman and varsity football teams and, in 2006, he worked with the freshman-sophomore baseball team.
